Choosing the Right Amusement Rides for Your Event: Tips and Considerations

Venue size is usually one of the first factors to consider when choosing the right amusement rides. School fetes and town shows have it pretty easy in the regard – there’s usually plenty of space for the big thrill rides on school ovals or local town footy grounds. Every ride has a different thrill level and recommended age of rider. Choosing the correct number of amusement rides based on your expected attendees is a golden rule of organising a ride-driven event.

Choosing amusement rides is hard. In fact, it was the hardest thing about starting a business in amusement ride operation. ‘Which ones do we pick?’ was a question we needed months to answer, and then of course it had to be asked again once we expanded and invested in even more rides.

So, now the onus is on you to ask that question when throwing an event. Hooray!

But luckily, your amusement ride gurus are here to help. Let’s explain how to choose the right amusement rides for your event, with tips from the team at Advanced Amusements.

Venue size

Of course we’d all like to have a Ferris wheel or giant slide at our event, but if you’re hosting it in your backyard, you might have to knock on the neighbour’s door and ask to borrow their yard, too. Venue size is usually one of the first factors to consider when choosing the right amusement rides.

Attendee demographics

So, you’re putting on a school fete at your high school. You’ve got plenty of space for rides, a decent amount of room in the budget and you’ve decided to go with the most thrilling, exhilarating, terrifying amusement ride… the teacups.

Not exactly a ride for 17-year-olds, is it? Every ride has a different thrill level and recommended age of rider. A high school fete should include rides for an adult demographic, with more rides geared towards thrills. A primary school fete, on the other hand, should feature more moderate rides, like the teacups, dodgem cars and the Sizzler.

Attendee numbers

If you’re expecting 1000+ tickets sold, don’t skimp out on the amusement rides! Choosing the correct number of amusement rides based on your expected attendees is a golden rule of organising a ride-driven event. Ignoring it can quickly lead to the opposite of fun: queues. Weaving, meandering, nauseating queues. People at Disneyland may be OK with waiting 4 hours for their favourite ride, but it certainly won’t fly at a town show or school fair.

Generally, 6 or 7 rides per 1000 guests is a good rule of thumb to follow. This way, your attendees will have plenty of choice and won’t have to queue up for too long.
